The cold air is here and what better way to stay warm than by snuggling up with a great read. Here are our top picks for picture books to read this winter:
The Night Before New Year’s by Natasha Wing
The Night Before New Year’s highlights all the fun traditions associated with a New Year’s Eve party…the only tough part is staying up until the clock strikes midnight.
Squirrel’s New Year’s Resolution by Pat Miller
Squirrel wonders, “What does resolution mean?” Quite simply, he learns it means to make a promise to yourself or to help others. Squirrel struggles to come up with any ideas, but by helping others stick to their resolutions, he discovers his own in the process.
Franklin’s Bad Day – Paulette Bourgeois & Brenda Clark
He’s got the winter blues. We feel ya, Franklin…we’ve all been there. In this sweet little story, Franklin has a day where nothing seems to go right. *Spoiler alert* We later learn that Franklin has been missing his friend who moved away and it has him feeling alllll the feelings. A great story for social-emotional learning, naming emotions and connecting to times when we’ve all felt that way.
Snow Day – Margaret McNamara
A fun and easy “Ready-to-Read” book from Scholastic. An April snowstorm comes rolling through and Nia’s wish for a snow day comes true. We all love a snow day! Familiar words, word repetition and simple sentences will help early readers build confidence.
Disney’s Frozen Storybook Collection
Frozen – all the rage right now, of course. Choose one (or a few) short stories from this collection. I like noticing the table of contents and modelling how to use it. Since this one won’t be read in one sitting, it could be a great time to make and use a bookmark too. Wearing your Elsa dress: optional, though encouraged.
The Hockey Tree – David Ward, Brian Deines
Ok, I love this one! It just embodies everything about a classic Canadian winter. Set in Saskatchewan, on nature’s finest skating rink: a frozen lake. Learn what a prairie puck is and where is comes from (hint: a hockey tree!)
Snow Kisses
For the little babes…a sweet rhyming board book to cuddle up with.
Snowmen at Night, Snowmen at Work, Snowmen All Year
Let imaginations run wild with this collection. The original, Snowmen at Night, has us wondering, “What are snowmen up to when we go to sleep at night?” Drinking cocoa? Having snowball fights? Ahh, that’s why they might look a little different when we wake up in the morning! Follow up with what types of jobs snowmen might have and what they might be doing in their “off season” with us if they didn’t melt in the warmer weather.
Ask your smart cookie, “What books have you been reading?” and tell me below, what are your favourite reads for this time of year?
